This workshop will present how to load and visualize LiDAR point cloud data in QGIS. First, there will be a short presentation on point cloud data in general and the implementation in QGIS. In the hands-on part of the workshop we will load and symbolize point cloud data (download links will be provided).
Workshop contents:
- Loading point cloud data
- Supported LiDAR formats (relationship between QGIS and PDAL)
- Query LiDAR attribute values with the "Identify Features" tool
- Symbology
- Extent only (placeholder)
- Color ramp of attributes
- RGB (assigning bands to color channels)
- Classification (like buildings, vegetation, water, etc.)
- Eye Dome Lighting Effect
- Point size configuration
- Relationship between "point budget" and "maximum screen space error"
We recommend to install QGIS 3.22 (or 3.20) in order to be able to follow along in the Mini-Workshop.
Data for download (exercises):
- Extent City of Solothurn (Switzerland)
- Trencin Castle (Slovakia) - with DTM and classes
- Helsinki train station (Finland) - with RGB values
Subsequently, Martin will present the 2nd LiDAR crowd funding campaign to be carried out by the same developer team like the first round (LutraConsulting, Hobu and North Road). The aim of this second round is to introduce a very versatile profile tool, not only for, but including point cloud data, filtering tools, eye dome lighting effect for 2D viewing, improved 3D views, better format support including COPC (cloud optimized point cloud) format.
This workshop will be instructed by Martin Dobias (LutraConsulting) in English language.
